Astro and, the Comparison to My Original Character, Quinn

This changes everything.

First of all, I'd like to talk a little bit about who my OC Quinn is, for those unaware.

His backstory is by far the most different, and also the most detailed, compared to backstories of other original characters I have.

But it's also one that explains, pretty much... everything.

First name: Quinn, last name: Meyer, was the last to be born in an already somewhat large family, and for the most part, he wasn't expected at all.

With this, there was an obvious distaste for him from the beginning– and it didn't help that there was quite an age gap between his siblings and him.

This made him an easy target for all kinds of mistreatment and mild emotional abuse, but what really stood out more, was Quinn's development of submission.

From the beginning, Quinn's parents made it very clear to him that if he wanted so much as .2 milliseconds of their love, attention, and care– he would have to work for it.

But not only would he have to work for it, but he'd also have to give into their demands. And this seriously scarred him, as he grew up constantly working towards pleasing his parents any way he could– even if it meant forking over the "things" that he wanted, his passions, desires and, dreams– all shoved down the drain in a desperate attempt to soothe the urgencies that come with forced dependency.

We skip years later to high school Quinn, who notoriously took quite an amount of extracurricular activities (all ranging from color-guard to football, and an entire sophomore year of jazz band). This was around the time where still there were moments of wanting to please his parents, there were also moments of realization that perhaps maybe the things he went through... weren't okay.

He started ever so slightly to look out for himself, and this really paved the way to a major realization: being pansexual.

And that very realization, changed everything for him.

Being dependent, meant that usually for Quinn, he had trouble making relationships with others, but on the odd chance that he did, he'd typically find himself being quite clingy and doing all he can to keep the relationship afloat, for obvious fear that it'd all come tumbling down if he didn't.

But, you know, maybe... if he just... I dunno– told everyone he's pansexual! It'd be okay... right?

Nope.

In fact, coming out as pansexual damaged his romantic relationships across the gender spectrum, with pretty much everyone who had dated or considered dating him having the negative stereotypes of pansexuality in their heads, basically confirming he wasn't someone they should date.

At that point, he lost all his titles (All of which consisted of "ladies man", "jock" and, "class clown", thanks to his obscene amount of puns he spoke on the daily, of course) and became an outcast.

And this carried with him, even into college, where lots of his romantic and even sometimes platonic relationships came to a strong halt once the topic of his sexuality came up.

So I think it's safe to say, Quinn has a lot of baggage on his shoulders.

His backstory continues even more, but for the sake of this blog post, we'll stop it there, but I'll mention things here and there should it be necessary.

With that out of the way, now we can move onto the comparisons I've found.

It started a while back, when I decided to take the 16 personalities quiz to see what Astro's MBTI type was, and weirdly enough, they got ENFJ.

Why is it weird you ask? Well... because Quinn is an ENFJ too!

What I also did a few day ago was retake the personality quiz I made for Vivid Insomnia (my Astro Boy fanfiction series), which has a vast majority of the common OCs in the series– including Quinn. I took it, mostly just for fun to see which character Astro would be, since obviously they weren't part of the quiz.

And yet again, they got Quinn.

But I know some of you might be asking, "But Emily, what does your OC have to do with Astro????" and to that I answer, the similarities they have.

Because I know that I didn't make Quinn to intentionally have similar traits to Astro– finding out that the two of them are actually more similar than I thought, completely changes my interpretation of Astro, and I think it might for you buds too!

While I do know though, that no 2 people are exactly the same, and thus the comparison of Astro and Quinn shouldn't be 1-1, knowing that there even can be a comparison made between them gives me a whole new perspective for sure.

Especially in terms of relationship building and even in the context of the 2003 series plot.

Quinn's need to constantly please others in hopes to have them stick around is a vital part of his personality– and by logic, Astro would assume this trait as well.

Digging deeper, we could say that this maybe even bleeds into how Astro handles the role of mediator throughout the series.

They assume the role from the beginning of the series as the one to "bridge the gap between humans and robots", but it may prove to be more difficult if all they want is approval from both sides but.... they can't... get that approval– because both sides are against each other!

Back to relationships, though, submission could explain why they've made it a point all the time to try and convince everyone to be their friend.

Unless that person is a straight up criminal, we've seen in some episodes, especially in"Old Dog, New Tricks", that Astro will go through lengths to try and make friends, even if that person isn't willing.

It's the fear of losing friends, losing love, and losing attention that to me scream the epitome of both Astro and Quinn's reasonings for their behaviors and actions.

But what do you think? Do you think Quinn's personality and the fact that it's similar to Astro's has meaning? Does it change your perspective of who Astro is as a character?

Definitely let me know, and thanks for reading!
